GCSE Skills

  • Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance
  • Understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance in physical activity and sport
  • Perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics and strategies
  • Develop ability to analyse and evaluate performance
  • Understand contribution that physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and wellbeing

 

By the end of year 9, students should be able to:

  • Lead a group of their peers in a warm up
  • Know the major muscles and where they are located on the body
  • Understand maximum heart rate and effects of exercise on the body
  • Describe different fitness tests and explain what component of fitness they test
  • Describe what makes up a healthy diet
  • Take part in a variety of different physical activities with some success in a game situation

 

By the end of year 8, students should be able to:

  • Lead a small group of their peers in a warm up
  • Know the major muscles and where some of them are located on the body
  • Know about maximum heart rate and that exercise will raise the heart rate to provide extra oxygen to the working muscles
  • Know some fitness tests
  • Give feedback to help someone improve their performance
  • Be aware that guidance and feedback can help someone improve their performance
  • Have an understanding of what makes up a healthy diet
  • Take part in a variety of different physical activities with some success

 

By the end of year 7, students should be able to:

  • Know how to warm up before physical activity
  • Know some of the major muscles and where some of them are located on the body
  • Know that exercise raises the heart rate
  • Talk about some fitness tests
  • Give some feedback to a peer concerning their performance
  • Have some understanding of what makes up a healthy diet
  • Take part in a variety of different physical activities with some success in practices in some lessons
